Kaw kaw, Gaw gaw

Kaw kaw is a variant of boogeyman from the Maltese folklore.

Kaw kaw strolls the streets at night.

He is able to smell a person's guilt and is capable of entering their homes by extending and contracting his snail-like body through any crack or fissure.

Once inside he is said to grin, with a toothless gaping mouth, at his hapless...

Another version of the creature exists in Wardija, where the Kaw Kaw is described as a massive giant who could traverse the Maltese islands in a few steps.

The Kaw Kaw was believed to favour hunting for guilty individuals between Christmas and the first week of February, as shown by a Maltese proverb: Il-Gaw-Gaw joħroġ lejlet il-Milied f'nofs il-lejl; jekk isib mustaċċih miblula, jgħid: Ix-xita għaddiet; jekk isibhom nexfin, igħid: Ix-xitwa gadha ġejja, "The Gaw-Gaw comes out on Christmas Eve at midnight and if his whiskers are damp, he says, 'Winter has passed', if he finds them dry, he says, 'Winter is still to come'".

Bast is The Egyptian cat-headed goddess.

Bastet was strictly a solar goddess until the arrival of Greek influence on Egyptian society, when she became a lunar goddess due to the Greeks associating her with their Artemis...

She was commonly paired with Sakhmet, the lion-headed goddess of Memphis, Wadjet, and Hathor...

Bastet was the "Daughter of Ra", a designation that placed her in the same ranks as such goddesses as Maat and Tefnut....

Additionally, Bastet was one of the "Eyes of Ra", the title of an "avenger" god who is sent out specifically to lay waste to the enemies of Egypt and her gods...

"When the Egyptians travel to Bubastis, they do so in this manner: men and women sail together, and in each boat there are many persons of both sexes.

Some of the women shake their rattles and some of the men blow their pipes during the whole journey, while others sing and clap their hands.

If they pass a town on the way, some of the women land and shout and jeer at the local women, while others dance and create a disturbance.

They do this at every town on the Nile. When they arrive at Bubastis, they begin the festival with great sacrifices, and on this occasion, more wine is consumed than during the whole of the rest of the year."

Juno is a daughter of Saturn, sister and consort of Jupiter, mother of Mars and Vulcan, and one of the most important of the Roman goddesses...

She used to have many duties, each with an associated title.

Juno is associated with marriage, fertility and all aspects of pregnancy and childbirth....

As Juno has all the characteristics of her husband, in so far as they refer to the female sex, she presides over all human affairs...

She is one of the 12 Olympians...

She is generally pictured like a matron, with a grave and majestic air, sometimes with a sceptre in her hand, and a veil on her head: she is represented also with a spear in her hand, and sometimes with a patera, as if she were about to sacrifice: on some medals she has a peacock at her feet, and sometimes holds the Palladium...

Juno's counterpart is the Greek Hera.

Cacus

Cacus is a fire-breathing giant shepherd from Italy...

Some experts argue that he is the son of Vulcan...

This monstrous giant used to dwel in a cave on the Aventine Hill of Latium, which was to become the site of Rome.

Distinguish between the Roman Cacus and the Greek Kakos who is a man-eating orge and the sun of Hephaestus...

Cacus was encountered and slain by Herakles as the hero was on his way back to Greece after fetching the cattle of Geryon in Erytheia (Spain)....

According to Evander, Hercules stopped to pasture the cattle he had stolen from Geryon near Cacus' lair.

As Hercules slept, the monster took a liking to the cattle and slyly stole eight of them - four bulls and four cows - by dragging them by their tails, so as to leave a trail in the wrong direction.

When Hercules awoke and made to leave, the remaining herd made plaintive noises towards the cave, and a single cow lowed in reply.

Angered, Hercules stormed towards the cave. A terrified Cacus blocked the entrance with a vast, immoveable boulder, forcing Hercules to tear at the top of the mountain to reach his adversary.

Cacus attacked Hercules by spewing fire and smoke, while Heracles responded with tree branches and rocks the size of millstones.

Eventually losing patience, Hercules leapt into the cave, aiming for the area where the smoke was heaviest.

Hercules grabbed Cacus and strangled the monster, and was praised throughout the land for his act....

He vanished numerous centuries ago but thought to become lost in time and space and should be restored soon...

Santelmo, St. Elmo's fire, Saint Elme's fire, Corposant

$

0

The Santelmo (St. Elmo's Fire) is a spirit in the Philippine folktales which appears as a mysterious fireball that comes from the middle of nowhere and rotates or dances in the air.

The term santelmo is the shortened form of the Tagalog words "Apoy ni San Elmo "-"St. Elmo's Fire".

St. Elmo's Fire has long served as an omen of heavenly intervention to sailors.

The ancient Greeks termed a single jet of the fire, Helena, and a double jet, Castor and Pollux....

It has also been known by the names St. Nicholas and St. Hermes, corpusante and Corpus Santos....

The name of St. Elmo is attributed to an Italian derivation of Sant 'Ermo or St. Erasmus (circa 300), the patron saint of the early Mediterranean sailors challenging the powers of storm and sea in small sailing vessels....

St. Elmo's Fire have ranged from a ghostly dancing flame to natural fireworks.

It usually is of a blue or bluish-white colour attached to fixed, grounded conductors and has a lifetime of minutes.

These latter properties prove the legendary/spiritual presence.

If a person is close enough to St. Elmo's Fire, he or she can hear it buzz or hiss sometimes.

Because the corona discharge is simply glowing plasma, rather than an actual fire, it will not cause objects around it to catch fire, and sometimes the light can be coaxed into doing tricks.

Airline pilots, for example, have written about playing with it when it gathers outside their windows, trailing their fingers across the windshield to attract the plasma.

The biblical burning bush that was not consumed may have been displaying one form of St. Elmo's Fire....

Ziburinis

The Žiburinis is a scary demonic, phosphorescent, shape-shinfting skeleton from Lithuania...

They say:

Once some people were braking flax in the drying barn.

One of the people who had just come in started saying that a ziburinis * was coming. One of flaxbrakers said, "I'm not afraid! Show it to me."

He went out and shot at it with a revolver. He shot right through it and came back inside.

"No harm done!" he said. "You're afraid. Why am I not afraid?" "No reason to fear this velnias shit," he said. And they all went on braking flax.

So far so good.

They went back home, had a meal, and lay down. They say that all the flaxbrakers went to lie down on some straw that they had put on the dirt floor.

The mistress of the house didn't know anything about what had happened.

Her husband, the master, was drying the flax in the barn. The men that came back were asleep.

They slept as the mistress peeled potatoes for an early meal. Suddenly she saw a ziburinis walk past the windows.

She thought of waking the men, but decided not to.

Then the ziburinis returned, entered through the window, and turned into a beautiful young maiden.

She put her hand to her eyes and walked past all the brakers, looking at them carefully. She also walked up to that one, the one who had fired the shot.

She walked up to him and touched him all over from head to toe. Then she made for the window and vanished. The mistress virtually fell off her chair.

As she lay senseless, all the brakers kept on sleeping. The next morning the master came home with a lantern to see why nobody had come to brake flax.

He had come to wake up the brakers. When he walked in, he saw they were still sleeping - nobody had wakened them. And the early meal hadn't been cooked yet either. He came into the kitchen.

His wife was still unconscious, lying on the dirt floor.

All the flax brakers jumped to their feet - nobody knew what had happened.

They rushed to the mistress, woke her, and she came back to life. The man who had fired the shot was dead.

And what made him shoot? Who was to blame?!

Fachen is both a Scotish and Irish dreadful monster...

Fachin can look as a bird-like creature with an appearance so frightening that it reportedly induced heart attacks in anyone who saw it....

Descriptions of the beast tend to vary and include such physical features as a single eye, a rooster like crest, a mane of black feathers tufted at the top and a very wide mouth....

The Fachen also was reported to have a single foot and in some cases is said to have only half a body...

The fachan was not just ugly, but vicious. It chased travelers in lonely places, jumped on them from behind and killed them...

The Fachen description is close to an ancient, terrestrial, predatory bird, which may have, at one time, inhabited the Emerald Isle.

Other speculate that it might be a Moa which has traveled from New Zealand to the British isles....

Puck, Robin Goodfellow, Pŭk, Pouke

Robin Goodfellow loves a good joke but is not one to make it hurtful.

He is a sort of hobgoblin.

Robin itself was a medieval nickname for the devil.

His mad pranks and merry jests, full of honest mirth and is a fit medicine for the melancholy...

The Puck of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream is a mischievous but friendly fairy.

With his flute made from a willow twig, he accompanies fairies on their moonlight dances.

In the earlier days, Puck is said to have been in-league with the Devil but he became more mischievous and fun as the years went by...

Robin Goodfellow was not only famous for shape-shifting and misleading travellers. He was also a helpful domestic sprite much like the brownies.

He would clean houses and such in exchange for some cream or milk. If offered new clothes, he'd stop cleaning.

"When I walk through the hills and sit by the quiet streams, I sometimes see a lonely figure sitting further up on the turf looking down at me.

It's old Puck, looking no worse for wear, and always with a tiny smile on his face.

He won't speak to me, but I know that he sees me.

Just from seeing his gaze distantly, I know what he's thinking: he sees the busses and trains and cars flying by, and he's amused at how quickly people sold the most important things in life away to the new wizards and their contraptions."

Shtriga

Shtriga is an awfully evil witch from Albanian folklore.

As legend says, this evil-doer preys upon the life essence of a person (spiritus vitae) and can feed on anyone, however they prefer the young through blood-parasitism at night.

Only the Shtriga could cure those she had victimized by spitting in their mouths.

There is also mixed lore about the creature being able to shapeshift into other creatures such as owls, which is why the screech owl has a reputation of being very unlucky...

However, instead of transforming into an owl when she goes for her midnight snack, she is more apt to take the form of a flying insect; a moth...

The male form of the vampiric Shtriga is Shtrigu or Shtrigan...

The legends say that if a silver coin were to be soaked in that blood and wrapped in cloth, it would become an amulet offering permanent protection from any shtriga...

The shtriga will refuse to eat anything spiced or containing garlic...

They say that the only way to devour a shtriga is to trap it on Easter with a cross made of pigs bone placed in the threshold of a church....

Heinzelmännchen make their own race or probably represent a sort of household Kobold (elves/dwarves/gnomes/pixies)...

"There is a tale that relates to the Heinzelmannchen of Cologne: There was a tailor who had a very curious wife who was intrigued to learn more about the Heinzelmannchen and what they looked like.

One evening she covered the floor with peas so that the Heinzelmannchen would slip and fall.

She then hoped to leap out and capture some of them.

Night fell and sure enough the Heinzelmannchen came and they slid out on the peas but most mysteriously they got away and never came back.

From that time on the inhabitants of Cologne had to do all the work themselves.

There is still a fountain in Cologne in which there is an inscription that reads ‘Neugierig war des Schneiders Weib’ meaning ‘curious was the tailors wife..."
